Invisible woman
Two Terracotta vessels.
Queen Hatsheput was an Egyptian Pharoah who had a large impact on Egyptian society, her name has been written in stone in many places however that didn't stop those who wanted her name to be erased. The NGV has a Stela on display that shows an example of her name being scratched out.
Invisible women are women who are like Queen Hatsheput. Despite their impacts many do not want them to receive credit or recognition for their role in society and human history.
The women on the vessel (jug) have no face. Yet despite their identity not being shown their impact remains, set in stone. Their story cannot be erased. Thanks to modern technology, historians and archaeologists their story has been preserved and I am able to include them on this work.
The second vessel (urn) is me doing research into ancient Greek pottery and attempting to recreate a common form. I textured it using black and white slip so it looks old and weathered.
