Attention is the beginning of devotion 2024
Stoneware, terra sigillata
In her poem “Invitation”, Mary Oliver instructs us to “not walk by without pausing to attend to this rather ridiculous performance.” During the 2020 COVID lockdowns, I followed her guidance, dedicating time outdoors to walking around Brunswick East, Carlton North and Fitzroy North, pausing to experience moments that I might have otherwise considered unremarkable. These six forms are part of a series that resulted - found objects and floral debris reimagined and transfigured over and over again, memorialising the otherwise impermanent and inconsequential.
