“For freedom, for dream”
Stoneware #10&colored underglaze
As a Chinese artist with a passion for multicultural art, I, Jiayi Zhu, explore the intersection between the ancient and the modern, seeking to draw connections between historical forms of expression and iconic figures in contemporary narratives. This series, made from stoneware #10 and underglaze, reinterprets characters from *Attack on Titan* (Eren Yeager & Mikasa Ackerman) and *Project Sekai* through the lens of ancient Egyptian art.The rigid and formal postures of ancient Egyptian figures have always fascinated me. In their art, there is a sense of permanence, with each pose conveying strength, serenity, and timelessness. I aimed to channel this sense of endurance into my work, blending it with the dynamic personalities and emotional depth of the characters represented. Through their stillness, my figures invite the viewer to reflect on the narratives they embody, and how modern heroes resonate with mythological archetypes from the past. The use of stoneware and underglaze not only roots the work in traditional ceramic art but also emphasized texture and simplicity, allowing viewers to focus on the presence of the figures and the emotions conveyed through their postures. Ultimately, this project is an exploration of the human figure—whether from ancient or modern times—and how form communicates across cultures, encouraging us to consider the timelessness of storytelling throughout history.
